Dry wall cutter and / or Sander / Sand paper

Garbage bags

Follow these simple 5 Steps for easy home mold removal.

Step 1: Assessing the area and problem

Investigate how far does the problem stem from.

Identify all the sources that lead to mold growth.

Plan out the mold cleaning procedure and protocols

Step 2: Contain the problem area

Put on protective gear before handling mold. Wear goggles, face mask, long rubber gloves and disposable clothing. This can help to protect yourself from ingesting the hazardous mold.

Use Visqueen, or any other plastic sheeting materials to contain the problem area.

This is to prevent mold spores from getting into other areas of your house.

Contain your area with the help of blue tape, like the picture below:

Step 3: Start the mold cleaning procedure

Dampen the mold infected areas with white vinegar water. Use 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water. This helps to prevent molds from becoming airborne when disturbed / cleaned.

For cleaning ceiling mold, use a mop to dampen the problem spots.

Use sander or sand paper to sand off the stubborn molds off wooden items like cupboards, wooden tables, etc.

Scrub the area while it is still damp using baking soda and white vinegar mixture. Repeat this to remove all the visible molds.

Rinse well with plain water. If rinsing is not possible, wipe clean the area with a dampen cloth. Discard and replace the cloth once it is soiled with molds. You won’t like the idea of contaminating other areas of your house with the soiled cloth.

Let the area to dry completely. Do not use fan or blower to help drying the area as this could spread the airborne mold spores.

Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar over the cleaned surface and allow to dry completely. This helps to kill any mold residue and to prevent future mold growth.

Step 4: Dispose Materials

Dispose the mold contaminated materials using the garbage bags and seal it properly with blue tape.

Discard the Visqueen / plastic sheetings and all other cleaning tools such as brush, mop, cloth, etc.

Step 5: Clean and Filter

After the mold removal is done, it’s time to clean and filter the surrounding air.

You may use those anti microbial soap like Pinkrobial to clean the area again.

Run an air purifier that comes with “Heppa” filter to purify the surrounding air.

In the video above, bleach is used to clean and kill mold. I would not recommend using bleach to clean / kill mold as bleach would release harmful fumes which are equally bad for your health. White vinegar is a safer alternative to bleach for cleaning mold and mildew.

To clean and kill mold with white vinegar, mix 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water and spray the solution onto the problem spots. You may use undiluted vinegar solution to treat stubborn mold stains. Let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before scrubbing off with a mixture of Borax and white vinegar. Repeat this process until all the mold and mildew are gone. Rinse well with clean water or wipe clean using damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Allow the areas to dry completely.

The best solution for mold odor removal is to remove the source. In this case, it is the mold that produces the musty odors that linger in the house. You need to eliminate molds or mildews that grow in the house especially in the warm and humid areas like bathroom, basement, attic, crawl space, kitchen, etc. Strong mold odor is the best indicator for mold growth and the essential of mold removal.

Mold loves warm and humid places. The higher the humidity, the more it spreads. Therefore, the first step of mold odors removal is to control the indoor humidity. Keep the humidity level within the house at 50% or below. Invest in a good dehumidifier to help regulate the indoor humidity.

Though low humidity cannot really kill the mold, but it does help to stop mold from spreading and “breathing” which emits the mycotoxins that stinks. However, if humidity level rises above 50% for more than 72 hours, mold will start to “breathe” again and release the musty odors. Thus, it is very important to keep the humidity level under control for effective mold odors removal.

It is also vital to take note that dead mold can cause musty odors as well as allergic reaction too. After you have “hibernated” the mold spores from spreading, you need to kill and remove it in order to make your home mold free. To clean visible surface mold that grows on walls, tiles, glass, tubs, and other non-porous materials, you can use normal household detergent like Borax.

Damp the surface slightly before washing to prevent molds from becoming airborne. Scrub hard with a sturdy brush to brush off all visible molds. Repeat the process if necessary especially when dealing with stubborn mold stains. Rinse with clean water and allow the areas to dry completely.

Vinegar is another good solution for mold odors removal. Vinegar can kill 80% of the mold spores. Use undiluted white vinegar to remove mold odors. Spray vinegar solution onto the surface and let it stand for at least 15 minutes to allow the vinegar to seep through the surface and kill the mold spores. If you can tolerate the strong fumes from vinegar, you may wipe dry the areas without rinsing. Otherwise rinse well with clean water and allow drying thoroughly.

Next you need to eliminate loose mold spores that are floating in the air. Use an air purifier that equipped with carbon gas filter to absorb the mycotoxins from the mold. The use of steam cleaner will also help to diminish tiny mold particles that have become airborne.

Once you are done with mold removal and getting rid of the mold odors, you need to observe a regular mold inspection to prevent molds from re-grow. Do a routine mold testing, as you will with other household maintenance tasks. Early mold detection can help minimize the infestation.

Keep the areas clean and dry as much as possible to cut down the food source for mold. Be attentive to any leakages or moisture problem in your house and get them fixed as soon as possible. Dry the damp areas or water-damage materials within 24 to 48 hours can significantly lower the risk of mold growth.

If you find yourself cannot endure the mold odors and the allergic reactions that caused by molds, and you are getting tired of dealing with repeated mold problems. Mold Manuscript provides you with professional strategies to deal with mold remediation and mold prevention. The downside is mold tend to infest carpets which then pose a threat to human health. Therefore, when it comes to home mold removal, carpets should be checked thoroughly.

For non-severe cases, mold removal from carpets is possible. Otherwise it is better to dispose of the carpets than to risk our health.

Here’s how carpet mold removal is done.

Check the source of carpet mold. It may originate from a leak in the wall or rain water penetrating the window sill.

Lift the carpet and lay it on a flat surface.

Mold can come in shades of black, white, red, blue, brown, green, orange or even pink, and they emit an earthy smell.

Regardless of whether they are hazardous to human health, our first instinct is to stem mold growth. In most cases mold can easily be removed by using soap and water. Where bleaching is desirable, use a weak bleach solution. Do not mix bleach with ammonia because doing so will create very dangerous fumes.

As mold cannot be removed from materials, we just have to throw away absorbent and porous materials like ceiling tiles, carpet and drywall which have become moldy.

To remove mold in buildings such as offices and houses, we have the choice of hiring professionals or experts in this field. They should be licensed or certified to do the work. It is even better if they could produce evidence of experience in mold removal or mention the types of training they had undergone to equip themselves to fight mold.

Bathroom mold removal is not easy to handle, you must first identify the source of the problem. Mold growth is very common in bathroom, especially on the ceilings or walls. Bathroom mold can easily be detected either by the musty smell of the area or by the development of blackish / greenish mold on the tiles and walls.

The reason why molds grow in bathroom is that this area provides the ideal situation for them to flourish. Thus bathroom mold removal shall begin with eliminating the food source for mold. Walls, ceilings and tiles need to be constantly cleaned to remove the food source. Mold killers are good at cleaning bathroom mold. Use surface mold killer to effectively scrub off the mold growing on walls and tiles.

Since you can’t ensure dryness in the bathroom, you shall reduce the humidity in the shower area. Use of dehumidifier and ventilation system can promote better ventilation and air circulation in the bathroom. Controlling the humidity level in the bathroom can effectively prevent the future mold growth.

Bathroom mold removal may produce some unbearable odors. This funky smell is from the toxic discharge released by the mold. These discharge and waste are very potent; you may need to scour hard to get rid of them. When you are cleaning them, make sure you put on proper protection gears. Wear goggles, mask and gloves while carry out bathroom mold removal process. Mold spores will be released into the air during mold cleanup. These spores are very hazardous to your health.

Very often, mold cleanup includes the total removal of affected building materials which are already saturated by water penetration or visibly damaged by mold growth. These professionals may even decide, in extreme cases, to condemn the building altogether if mold is seen to have enveloped most of its structures.

Where repair or mold removal is needed, you may find some contractors who can remove the affected materials and eliminate the moisture source.

Don’t be surprised that there are cleaning companies out there who specialize in fabric treatment. They remove mold and mold spores from our clothing to discard odor and prevent damaging mold growth to the garments.

Mold is stubborn living organism, if mold starts growing in your home, it will not want to leave.

But the good news is there are several things we can do to help in home mold removal.

1. Eliminate the source of moisture

In order to combat indoor mold growth, we must fix the moisture problem. Without moisture, mold cannot grow. Some of the common causes for indoor moisture problems are:

Leaking pipes and roof

Poor ventilation of the house especially kitchen and bathroom

Bad venting of household appliances such as washing machine and dryers

Excessive usage of humidifier

On top of fixing the leaking pipes and roof, we must also control the humidity level within our home. Invest in a good heating and cooling ventilation system to provide better air circulation. Besides that, the use of dehumidifier can also help to reduce humidity level in your home.

2. Keep dry

Whenever there is an overflow or flooding, you should dry the wet materials instantly to prevent mold growth. Use fans and dehumidifier to assist in the drying process. Items that cannot be dried well after 48 hours shall be disposed of.

3. Handling of contaminated items

Items that are contaminated by mold or mildew shall be treated with care. Mild mildew growth on clothes can often be treated with soap and water, then allowing them to sun dry or air dry. Though you should discard severely damages clothing.

Contaminated paper products shall be discarded, though minor damage can be treated by brushing off surface mold and dashing with some talcum powder to remove dampness.

Severe mold infected ceiling tiles and carpets should typically be thrown away. Professional services may be necessary if you want to save minor contaminated carpets.

4. Surface cleaning

Solid materials / hard surfaces can always be cleaned of mold. Brushing of or scrubbing of the surface mold with detergent and water, followed by thorough drying can be effective.

5. Disinfecting

You may want to disinfect the hard surface after they have been cleaned of mold. Use a mixture of bleach and water to effectively disinfect any hard surface. Wipe the solution onto the surfaces and allowing them to dry.

Remember that after you have done mold removal in your home, you shall keep your door closed from this uninvited guest. Watch out for any potential moisture problems, musty odors or water damage. Mold will try to invade again whenever possible. Preventing mold is always cheaper than mold removal.
