Some helpful steps anyone can follow to remove mold:

5. Start removing any contaminated materials that could pose a threat to future mold amplification.

What to Do if You Encounter a Mold Problem

If by chance, you do encounter a mold problem, the first thing that should be done is to eliminate the source of the moisture or water.  Then you should dry the area out by using a dehumidifier.  To further eliminate the mold problem, you need to scrub the surfaces that have mold with mold removal products. You can use normal household cleaners to minor mold infestation. The next step to solve the mold problem is to bleach the affected areas and to do a weekly vinegar rinse. Then it is highly advisable to paint with oil-based paint if possible.  This eliminates any future mold problem by trapping any remaining mold spores.  It is also recommended to use an air purifier to eliminate airborne spores from the area.  This is what you should do if you encounter a mold problem in your home.

Different Ways of Testing Mold

There are different ways of mold testing. One is by having a certified Mold Testing Company to carry out the indoor mold testing for you. They come in and get air samples in Petri dishes. These samples are then sent to a lab. Once the result is out, they will send the appropriate mold removal and remediation recommendations to you.

Alternatively, you can implement the DIY mold testing yourself. You can get those do-it-yourself kits that are specifically designed for mold testing from your local home improvement and hardware stalls. These kits may vary in the method of mold testing. Some of them use films while others use Petri dishes and liquids to determine the presence of mold.

Like I said before, mold testing is extremely important. If you move into a premise before any mold testing is done, there is a chance that you would get sick and develop mold allergies. If there is prolonged exposure without any treatment, these symptoms can turn into deadly illnesses and diseases. Some of these include cancers, heart problems, breathing difficulties, chronic bronchitis, and many others.

Mold Inspection – Calling an Inspector Compared to doing it yourself

For first time homeowners, the best bet is to call an inspector. This way you can be sure that the mold inspection is done properly. If you are a seasoned homeowner, then more than likely you know what you are looking for and can do a mold inspection by yourself. This will save you a pretty penny.

Search the house for water damaged spots and places that have a high humidity. These are the places where mold is likely to be found. Step 2 of your mold inspection should be finding areas that have mold growing, under the carpet, in the walls, etc. Wash these surfaces with an antimicrobial cleaner and then follow this with bleach cleaning. You should probably go on a mold inspection at least once a month, especially if you are purchasing an older home with a basement. This will help you to eliminate future problems and prevent mold from growing.

As I mentioned earlier, mold needs 4 items to grow – water, food, ideal temperature and air.

We can’t control the air and food source, but we can reduce the moisture content in our homes to cripple mold activities.

Address all leaking pipes, roofs and windows without any delay. This is because mold needs a constant supply of moisture to take hold before multiplying. We stop mold by cutting off its water source. If a leak is repaired immediately, house mold cannot spread.

Good drainage is important to our homes. Rain water should be drained away rather than allowed to collect in the basement.

Ensure that wet areas such as sinks, toilets, laundry rooms and bathtubs do not have standing water.

To keep our homes at low humidity, we may consider the use of a dehumidifier or an air-conditioner.

Be mindful of areas where cold and warm air meets, the ideal situation for creating moisture.

Be a mold inspector of your beloved home, and check especially the exterior. Are there any chances for water to leak into the interior? Fix as soon as possible any cracks in the wall. Mold inspection and mold detection go hand in hand towards mold control.

Also, we must not forget to make sure our homes are well ventilated. Fresh air that recycles in the home interior provides a clean, healthy environment for us to live in.
