In the video above, bleach is used to clean and kill mold. I would not recommend using bleach to clean / kill mold as bleach would release harmful fumes which are equally bad for your health. White vinegar is a safer alternative to bleach for cleaning mold and mildew.

To clean and kill mold with white vinegar, mix 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water and spray the solution onto the problem spots. You may use undiluted vinegar solution to treat stubborn mold stains. Let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before scrubbing off with a mixture of Borax and white vinegar. Repeat this process until all the mold and mildew are gone. Rinse well with clean water or wipe clean using damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Allow the areas to dry completely.

In this blog post, I will share with you how to prevent mold growth on wood surfaces and ways to safely remove mold mildew from wood materials.

Molds nourish on the minerals and oil in the paint of the wood surface. This causes discoloration to the wood surface. Sometimes, they can eat into the paint film and penetrate to the underlying wood and destroy the structure.

Most of the times, using some mold or mildew resistant paints for outdoor wood surfaces can prevent this from happening. These paints are formulated with special chemicals to fight mold attack. You can get one of this paint from your local paint and hardware stores.

Bear in mind though, these mold-resistant paints are not suitable to be used on window sills, beds, playpens or wooden toys as the chemicals in the paint can be very hazardous to small children.

How to remove mold and mildew from wood

If you see molds or mildew start growing on wood surface, increase the air circulation and use heat to dry the wood as much as possible. Always keep in mind that stagnant air is as dangerous as stagnant water, it promotes mold growth. Regulate the ventilation to allow fresh air to flow in.

To clean mold and mildew from mildly infested wood materials:

1. Moisten the infected area with little plain water; this is to prevent the molds from becoming airborne when disturbed.
2. Scrub off the visible molds and mildew with mild alkali. You can use washing soda or trisodium phosphate; mix 10 tablespoons to a gallon of water. Alternatively, a mixture of borax and white vinegar works well too.
3. Wipe clean with a damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Discard the cloth when it is soiled with mold and mildew. You will not want the soiled cloth to infect other areas of your house.
4. After the cleaning is done; spray a layer of white vinegar onto the wood surface and leave it without rinsing. This helps to disinfect and prevent future mold growth.
5. Allow the wood to dry completely in the sun if possible. Otherwise, use a blower or fan to help drying the surface.
6. Apply mold or mildew resistant paint.

If the molds have eaten through the paint or coating, you will need to remove all the paint or coating from the problem spots before cleaning the molds. Use undiluted vinegar to moisten the stained spot and let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before sanding down the paint / coating. Scrub off the mold with a stronger solution this time if necessary. Rinse well and allow the wood to dry thoroughly. Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar to help disinfect the area and prevent future mold growth.

Bathroom and shower rooms are prone to mold growth as they exposed to moisture most of the times. So, what I usually do after each shower is to splash clean water onto the bathroom walls to remove soapy residues. These residues if not removed will become the mail food source for mold.

I will also keep a bottle of diluted white vinegar in the bathroom and make sure to spray the vinegar solution onto the bathroom walls and shower curtain after each shower. This helps to prevent mold growth and disinfect at the same time. For the bathroom floor, I mop with diluted white vinegar too once in a week.

To remove mold from the corners of bathtubs and showers, I use baking soda and vinegar paste as demonstrated in the video below. Instead of spraying bleach water, I use vinegar water to prevent mold from growing back. It produces the same results too and it is greener to use vinegar for mold removal at home.

Black mold poses great damages to your health as well as the building structure. When you notice the first sign of black mold, you want to get rid of it as soon as you can.

There are 2 options when it comes to black mold removal: you can either hire professionals to implement the black mold removal project; or you can do it yourself. If you choose to implement black mold removal yourself, here are the precaution measures you need to take.

Precautions for black mold removal

1. Use disposable clothing when performing black mold removal. Discard the clothing after you have finished with the removal of black mold. Do not wash it with your other laundries. This is to prevent the mold spores that attached to the your clothes from infecting other laundries. Black mold is deadly to your health.

2. Use face mask or respirator to protect yourself from inhaling the hazardous mold spores.

3. Protect your eyes with goggles that are able to filter tiny spores.

4. Make sure you take short breaks in between the course of black mold removal to give yourself some fresh air.

5. Seal off the area or room that you intend to carry out black mold removal with the use of plastic sheeting and duct tape.

6. Before you begin with black mold removal, make sure you moisten the area or surface that you are working on. This helps to prevent mold spores from becoming airborne.

Black Mold Removal Procedure

1. Wash off the visible surface mold as much as possible with soap and water.

2. To disinfect the area, you have 2 options. Use mild bleach solution on non-porous surface like counter top, tiles, glass, walls, floor, tub, etc. Alternatively, you can use undiluted white vinegar for black mold removal.

3. Spray the bleach solution or vinegar solution onto the area and let it sit for at least 15 minutes before rinse off with warm water.

4. Allow the area to dry completely.

Is vinegar strong enough to kill mold? Yes, but to some extent. The natural acidic feature of vinegar makes it possible to kill about 80% of the mold species. Therefore, vinegar is always a good choice when it comes to dealing with minor mold infestation at home.

However, regular cleaning with vinegar is essential to guarantee a mold-free environment. You can consider mopping the floors with vinegar on a weekly basis. Rinsing the bathroom walls with vinegar solution every alternate day does help in preventing mold.

How to remove and kill mold with vinegar

1. Make sure you use only white fermented vinegar to kill mold, other synthetic acetic acids will not do the job.

2. Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar.

3. Spray vinegar onto mold infested surfaces and in places where mold regularly grows, such as shower curtains, grout of tiles, walls, sealing underneath faucets, edges and outside of the bathtub, counter top, etc.

4. Leave the vinegar to sit for a minimum of 30 minutes for the acid to kill the mold.
Give a good scrub to the bathroom caulk with this baking soda paste. After the initial scrub, spray some bleach water onto the bathroom caulk to kill residual mold. Let the bleach water to dry completely before applying a second scrub.

If the mold is too stubborn to get rid of, you may consider removing the caulk completely. After removing the caulk from your bathroom, sprays bleach water onto the area to kill mold. This is to stop the mold from spreading before re-caulking the bathroom. Let the bleach water to dry completely before re-caulking. When you are done, spray bleach water again onto the bathroom caulk to make sure mold is removed entirely.

Spraying bleach water onto bathroom caulk on a weekly basis can keep mold at bay.

Carpet mold removal is very challenging. Once mold starts growing in the carpet, it is extremely important to get rid of it. If you do not remove the source, carpet mold will continue to grow to the point that people in the home will get severely ill. Usually carpet mold grows in areas that have been soaked with water, and has not had substantial opportunity to dry completely. It is like having a giant Petri dish in your home. Wet carpet is a breeding ground for mold.

There are high ozone shock treatments that can be used in carpet mold removal, but they are only effective if the carpet was only partially wet. These treatments would have to be repeated over and over again to ensure complete removal of all carpet mold spores; this can become quite costly.

Sad, Cold Hard Truth of Carpet Mold Removal

The sad, cold, hard truth of it is that the only effective means of carpet mold removal is to remove the carpet itself. This may be expensive at first; however, in the long run, it will save you money. Tear the carpet out and replace it. When removing the carpet, you must make sure that the floor underneath is completely dry and then vacuum it to remove loose mold spores. If the floor is made of plywood, it is recommended that you paint it with oil-based paint before laying the new carpet.

Do-it-yourself Carpet Mold Removal
However, if your carpet mold infection is not severe, you can always try to remove it yourself. Get yourself a carpet cleaner, a vacuum type device, that is able to suck up the excess moisture from your carpet and at the same time clean the carpet with the integrated cleaning solution. Alternatively, you can also clean carpet mold with vinegar, alcohol and cleaning solution that made of detergent and warm water.

These are the various cleaning solutions that can be used as effective mold removal products:

Vinegar

1. Borax as mold removal product
Borax is natural household cleaning product that is commonly used for cleaning toilets and drains. Borax is a non-toxic cleaner as it does not release dangerous chemicals or harmful fumes. Borax is a natural mold inhibitor, when mixed with water it can be used to kill mold.

Cleaning Mold with Borax solution
- Use 1 cup of Borax to 1 gallon of water to create a cleaning solution.
- Before you begin the mold removal process with Borax solution, vacuum all the loose mold to prevent mold spores from becoming airborne during the cleaning process.
- Apply the Borax solution onto the mold infected areas and scrub hard with a sturdy brush to remove all the surface mold. You may repeat this process 2 – 3 times for stubborn mold.
- Wipe off the excess moisture and the residual mold dust. This is to prevent the mold particles from spreading into the air when the surface has dried up..
- Do not rinse the treated areas with water, the Borax solution that left behind will prevent molds from growing on the areas again.
- Allow the cleaned areas to dry entirely.

2. Use bleach for mold removal

Bleach is an effective mold killer for surface mold. It is good at killing mold species that is growing on non-porous materials like glass, tiles, countertops, and bathtubs. Bleach kills mold that it comes into contact with. However, for molds growing within the surface like drywalls and woods; bleach cannot reach into the porous materials. Thus using bleach as mold removal product on these materials is not effective for bleach can only kill the surface mold and leaving the roots untreated.

Killing mold with bleach solution
- Make sure the area to be treated with bleach solution is well ventilated as bleach produces abrasive fumes. Put on long rubber gloves to protect your hands during the mold removal process.
- Create a mild solution that made up of one cup of bleach to one gallon of water.
- Apply the bleach solution onto the mold infected surfaces.
- Leave the solution to set in. Do not rinse with water as bleach will prevent mold growth in the future.

Using bleach as mold removal product: The Cons
i. When bleach solution is used on porous materials, the chlorine in bleach cannot break into the surface, it is left on the surface while the water component is being absorbed into the porous material. This provides further moisture for the mold to thrive on. While the surface mold may be killed but the roots of mold growth are left untreated, which implies the return of mold and this may result in repeated bleaching.

ii. Another downside of using bleach to kill mold is that bleach can cause damages to the materials being treated as bleach is an abrasive chemical. Besides that, bleach produces toxic fumes when mixed with ammonia.

3. Vinegar as mold removal product
Vinegar is a natural and safe mold cleaner. With its mild acidic element, vinegar is able to kill about 80% of the mold species.

Removing mold with vinegar
- Use the white distilled vinegar to remove indoor mold.
- Transfer the undiluted vinegar into a spray bottle and spray onto the mold infected areas.
- Leave the vineger to sit for at least an hour.
- Wipe up the area with water and leave it to dry thoroughly.
- To prevent mold growth on surfaces, you can spray the vinegar on the surfaces and leave it without wiping clean with water. In order to ensure the surfaces stay mold-free, you may need to repeat this every other day.
