How to prevent mold growth

Posted in Mold Prevention on May 6th, 2009 by admin – 2 Comments

Preventing mold from growing proves cheaper than the home mold removal after it had grown.

As I mentioned earlier, mold needs 4 items to grow – water, food, ideal temperature and air.

We can’t control the air and food source, but we can reduce the moisture content in our homes to cripple mold activities.

We stop mold by cutting off its water source. If a leak is repaired immediately, house mold cannot spread.

Good drainage is important to our homes. Rain water should be drained away rather than allowed to collect in the basement.

Ensure that wet areas such as sinks, toilets, laundry rooms and bathtubs do not have standing water.

To keep our homes at low humidity, we may consider the use of a dehumidifier or an air-conditioner.

Be mindful of areas where cold and warm air meets, the ideal situation for creating moisture.

Also, we must not forget to make sure our homes are well ventilated. Fresh air that recycles in the home interior provides a clean, healthy environment for us to live in.

Symptoms from mold growing in our homes

symptoms-may-caused-by-mold-presenseWhen we are exposed to mold growth in our home environment, such symptoms may occur :

  • Respiratory irritation
  • Joint aches
  • Headaches
  • Cough
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Eye irritation
  • Skin allergies
  • Fatigue

These symptoms may or may not be caused by mold presence. But where mold is found in homes, the rate of these symptoms surfacing is high. If your children have eye irritations, ask whether they have been touching places with mold growing and whether they had subsequently rubbed their eyes without washing their hands first. And if you found your family constantly having cough or runny nose, check your home for mold existence.

Of course, there are other factors linked to the above symptoms, and they may not be associated with mold at all. But if you suspect that your health is being affected by mold, do see your doctor for confirmation.

Mold in your home

In nature, mold growing is a normal thing to occur. But it is abnormal for mold to grow in our homes.

Now how does that happen?

mold-spores Spores are the reason why mold can multiply. Spores, produced by mold, create mold allergy and other sicknesses connected to mold exposure. Mold itself cannot cause that.

When spores are released into the air and land on a surface that can provide water, air and food, mold reproduces and grow.

And that’s exactly what happened to our homes. An abundance of spores simply drift in through open doors and windows, pushed by the winds. By the way, we also bring indoors spores that settle on our clothes and shoes.

It is cheaper to prevent mold growth than to remove mold that has already grown in our homes.
