Dry wall cutter and / or Sander / Sand paper

Garbage bags

Follow these simple 5 Steps for easy home mold removal.

Step 1: Assessing the area and problem

Investigate how far does the problem stem from.

Identify all the sources that lead to mold growth.

Plan out the mold cleaning procedure and protocols

Step 2: Contain the problem area

Put on protective gear before handling mold. Wear goggles, face mask, long rubber gloves and disposable clothing. This can help to protect yourself from ingesting the hazardous mold.

Use Visqueen, or any other plastic sheeting materials to contain the problem area.

This is to prevent mold spores from getting into other areas of your house.

Contain your area with the help of blue tape, like the picture below:

Step 3: Start the mold cleaning procedure

Dampen the mold infected areas with white vinegar water. Use 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water. This helps to prevent molds from becoming airborne when disturbed / cleaned.

For cleaning ceiling mold, use a mop to dampen the problem spots.

Use sander or sand paper to sand off the stubborn molds off wooden items like cupboards, wooden tables, etc.

Scrub the area while it is still damp using baking soda and white vinegar mixture. Repeat this to remove all the visible molds.

Rinse well with plain water. If rinsing is not possible, wipe clean the area with a dampen cloth. Discard and replace the cloth once it is soiled with molds. You won’t like the idea of contaminating other areas of your house with the soiled cloth.

Let the area to dry completely. Do not use fan or blower to help drying the area as this could spread the airborne mold spores.

Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar over the cleaned surface and allow to dry completely. This helps to kill any mold residue and to prevent future mold growth.

Step 4: Dispose Materials

Dispose the mold contaminated materials using the garbage bags and seal it properly with blue tape.

Discard the Visqueen / plastic sheetings and all other cleaning tools such as brush, mop, cloth, etc.

Step 5: Clean and Filter

After the mold removal is done, it’s time to clean and filter the surrounding air.

You may use those anti microbial soap like Pinkrobial to clean the area again.

Run an air purifier that comes with “Heppa” filter to purify the surrounding air.

In the video above, bleach is used to clean and kill mold. I would not recommend using bleach to clean / kill mold as bleach would release harmful fumes which are equally bad for your health. White vinegar is a safer alternative to bleach for cleaning mold and mildew.

To clean and kill mold with white vinegar, mix 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water and spray the solution onto the problem spots. You may use undiluted vinegar solution to treat stubborn mold stains. Let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before scrubbing off with a mixture of Borax and white vinegar. Repeat this process until all the mold and mildew are gone. Rinse well with clean water or wipe clean using damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Allow the areas to dry completely.

In this blog post, I will share with you how to prevent mold growth on wood surfaces and ways to safely remove mold mildew from wood materials.

Molds nourish on the minerals and oil in the paint of the wood surface. This causes discoloration to the wood surface. Sometimes, they can eat into the paint film and penetrate to the underlying wood and destroy the structure.

Most of the times, using some mold or mildew resistant paints for outdoor wood surfaces can prevent this from happening. These paints are formulated with special chemicals to fight mold attack. You can get one of this paint from your local paint and hardware stores.

Bear in mind though, these mold-resistant paints are not suitable to be used on window sills, beds, playpens or wooden toys as the chemicals in the paint can be very hazardous to small children.

How to remove mold and mildew from wood

If you see molds or mildew start growing on wood surface, increase the air circulation and use heat to dry the wood as much as possible. Always keep in mind that stagnant air is as dangerous as stagnant water, it promotes mold growth. Regulate the ventilation to allow fresh air to flow in.

To clean mold and mildew from mildly infested wood materials:

1. Moisten the infected area with little plain water; this is to prevent the molds from becoming airborne when disturbed.
2. Scrub off the visible molds and mildew with mild alkali. You can use washing soda or trisodium phosphate; mix 10 tablespoons to a gallon of water. Alternatively, a mixture of borax and white vinegar works well too.
3. Wipe clean with a damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Discard the cloth when it is soiled with mold and mildew. You will not want the soiled cloth to infect other areas of your house.
4. After the cleaning is done; spray a layer of white vinegar onto the wood surface and leave it without rinsing. This helps to disinfect and prevent future mold growth.
5. Allow the wood to dry completely in the sun if possible. Otherwise, use a blower or fan to help drying the surface.
6. Apply mold or mildew resistant paint.

If the molds have eaten through the paint or coating, you will need to remove all the paint or coating from the problem spots before cleaning the molds. Use undiluted vinegar to moisten the stained spot and let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before sanding down the paint / coating. Scrub off the mold with a stronger solution this time if necessary. Rinse well and allow the wood to dry thoroughly. Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar to help disinfect the area and prevent future mold growth.

One of the natural ingredients that I found to be effective at killing mold: Tea Tree Oil. Tea tree oil is a type of essential oil that can be found in most health food stores. It is produced from Melaleuca tree, a tree that has needle-like leaves.

While tea tree oil is expensive, its broad-spectrum fungicide power seems to be able to kill almost all mold species. Tea tree oil is definitely a better alternative to bleach as it is natural and it does not produce harmful fumes that hurt the environment or the surrounding living beings.

Kill mold and mildew with tea tree oil

1. Mix 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle.
2. Shake well to blend.
3. Spray the tea tree oil solution onto the problem areas such as moldy ceiling, musty rug, moldy shower curtain, bathroom tub, walls and floors.
4. Let the solution to stand, do not rinse with water.
5. It will take few days for the strong smell of tea tree oil to dissipate.

This tea tree oil spray works wonder in killing and preventing mold. It can also help to remove musty mold odor. I usually keep a bottle of this spray in the bathroom for regular cleaning. Spray tea tree oil solution regularly on the areas prone to mold and mildew, such as bathroom walls and shower curtain can help preventing mold and mildew.

One of the inexpensive solutions for effective mold removal is by using hydrogen peroxide with at least 3% concentration. Hydrogen peroxide is a very good cleaning agent. It does not only clean, but disinfect at the same time. Hydrogen peroxide kills most of the bacterias and germs, including the deadliest mold spores.

Hydrogen peroxide, H2O2 breaks down to water and oxygen, thus creating no residual toxins of any kind when used to clean or kill mold. You can hardly see any evidence of its use in the surrounding environment after a few hours of the application.

Therefore, hydrogen peroxide is a much safer alternative as compared to bleach for removing mold at home. As hydrogen peroxide is less abrasive, it is also safe to be used on porous materials like wallpaper or fabric surfaces.

I usually get my bottle of hydrogen peroxide from a regular drug store. They commonly come in 3% concentration, which is pretty good for the mold cleaning job. It is very affordable; a bottle of hydrogen peroxide only costs me less than a dollar.

Here’s how I kill mold with hydrogen peroxide:

1. Mix one part of hydrogen peroxide with 3 parts of water.
2. Fill this hydrogen peroxide solution into a spray bottle.
3. Spray the solution onto the mold contaminated areas and let stand.
4. When the solution has dried out, re-apply hydrogen peroxide solution again onto the same areas and let it sit for another 15 minutes.
5. Then, scrub the areas to remove all the mold stains.
6. You may need to repeat step 4 to 5 when dealing with stubborn mold stains.
6. Wipe clean with a sponge or cloth.

Since light will reduce the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide, I usually keep the bottle of the remaining hydrogen peroxide in dark place and away from direct sunlight.

The best solution for mold odor removal is to remove the source. In this case, it is the mold that produces the musty odors that linger in the house. You need to eliminate molds or mildews that grow in the house especially in the warm and humid areas like bathroom, basement, attic, crawl space, kitchen, etc. Strong mold odor is the best indicator for mold growth and the essential of mold removal.

Mold loves warm and humid places. The higher the humidity, the more it spreads. Therefore, the first step of mold odors removal is to control the indoor humidity. Keep the humidity level within the house at 50% or below. Invest in a good dehumidifier to help regulate the indoor humidity.

Though low humidity cannot really kill the mold, but it does help to stop mold from spreading and “breathing” which emits the mycotoxins that stinks. However, if humidity level rises above 50% for more than 72 hours, mold will start to “breathe” again and release the musty odors. Thus, it is very important to keep the humidity level under control for effective mold odors removal.

It is also vital to take note that dead mold can cause musty odors as well as allergic reaction too. After you have “hibernated” the mold spores from spreading, you need to kill and remove it in order to make your home mold free. To clean visible surface mold that grows on walls, tiles, glass, tubs, and other non-porous materials, you can use normal household detergent like Borax.

Damp the surface slightly before washing to prevent molds from becoming airborne. Scrub hard with a sturdy brush to brush off all visible molds. Repeat the process if necessary especially when dealing with stubborn mold stains. Rinse with clean water and allow the areas to dry completely.

Vinegar is another good solution for mold odors removal. Vinegar can kill 80% of the mold spores. Use undiluted white vinegar to remove mold odors. Spray vinegar solution onto the surface and let it stand for at least 15 minutes to allow the vinegar to seep through the surface and kill the mold spores. If you can tolerate the strong fumes from vinegar, you may wipe dry the areas without rinsing. Otherwise rinse well with clean water and allow drying thoroughly.

Next you need to eliminate loose mold spores that are floating in the air. Use an air purifier that equipped with carbon gas filter to absorb the mycotoxins from the mold. The use of steam cleaner will also help to diminish tiny mold particles that have become airborne.

Once you are done with mold removal and getting rid of the mold odors, you need to observe a regular mold inspection to prevent molds from re-grow. Do a routine mold testing, as you will with other household maintenance tasks. Early mold detection can help minimize the infestation.

Keep the areas clean and dry as much as possible to cut down the food source for mold. Be attentive to any leakages or moisture problem in your house and get them fixed as soon as possible. Dry the damp areas or water-damage materials within 24 to 48 hours can significantly lower the risk of mold growth.

If you find yourself cannot endure the mold odors and the allergic reactions that caused by molds, and you are getting tired of dealing with repeated mold problems. Mold Manuscript provides you with professional strategies to deal with mold remediation and mold prevention. Mold has been known to be harmful to the health of humans and pets alike. It causes allergies, which bring out asthma like symptoms, coughing, watering eyes, and headaches from the noxious smell. Without mold removal taking place, these symptoms can turn into deadly illnesses and diseases. If you cannot remove the mold yourself, it is wise to hire a professional to do it. These people are called mold contractors.
