Dry wall cutter and / or Sander / Sand paper

Garbage bags

Follow these simple 5 Steps for easy home mold removal.

Step 1: Assessing the area and problem

Investigate how far does the problem stem from.

Identify all the sources that lead to mold growth.

Plan out the mold cleaning procedure and protocols

Step 2: Contain the problem area

Put on protective gear before handling mold. Wear goggles, face mask, long rubber gloves and disposable clothing. This can help to protect yourself from ingesting the hazardous mold.

Use Visqueen, or any other plastic sheeting materials to contain the problem area.

This is to prevent mold spores from getting into other areas of your house.

Contain your area with the help of blue tape, like the picture below:

Step 3: Start the mold cleaning procedure

Dampen the mold infected areas with white vinegar water. Use 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water. This helps to prevent molds from becoming airborne when disturbed / cleaned.

For cleaning ceiling mold, use a mop to dampen the problem spots.

Use sander or sand paper to sand off the stubborn molds off wooden items like cupboards, wooden tables, etc.

Scrub the area while it is still damp using baking soda and white vinegar mixture. Repeat this to remove all the visible molds.

Rinse well with plain water. If rinsing is not possible, wipe clean the area with a dampen cloth. Discard and replace the cloth once it is soiled with molds. You won’t like the idea of contaminating other areas of your house with the soiled cloth.

Let the area to dry completely. Do not use fan or blower to help drying the area as this could spread the airborne mold spores.

Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar over the cleaned surface and allow to dry completely. This helps to kill any mold residue and to prevent future mold growth.

Step 4: Dispose Materials

Dispose the mold contaminated materials using the garbage bags and seal it properly with blue tape.

Discard the Visqueen / plastic sheetings and all other cleaning tools such as brush, mop, cloth, etc.

Step 5: Clean and Filter

After the mold removal is done, it’s time to clean and filter the surrounding air.

You may use those anti microbial soap like Pinkrobial to clean the area again.

Run an air purifier that comes with “Heppa” filter to purify the surrounding air.

In the video above, bleach is used to clean and kill mold. I would not recommend using bleach to clean / kill mold as bleach would release harmful fumes which are equally bad for your health. White vinegar is a safer alternative to bleach for cleaning mold and mildew.

To clean and kill mold with white vinegar, mix 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water and spray the solution onto the problem spots. You may use undiluted vinegar solution to treat stubborn mold stains. Let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before scrubbing off with a mixture of Borax and white vinegar. Repeat this process until all the mold and mildew are gone. Rinse well with clean water or wipe clean using damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Allow the areas to dry completely.

Black mold poses great damages to your health as well as the building structure. When you notice the first sign of black mold, you want to get rid of it as soon as you can.

There are 2 options when it comes to black mold removal: you can either hire professionals to implement the black mold removal project; or you can do it yourself. If you choose to implement black mold removal yourself, here are the precaution measures you need to take.

Precautions for black mold removal

1. Use disposable clothing when performing black mold removal. Discard the clothing after you have finished with the removal of black mold. Do not wash it with your other laundries. This is to prevent the mold spores that attached to the your clothes from infecting other laundries. Black mold is deadly to your health.

2. Use face mask or respirator to protect yourself from inhaling the hazardous mold spores.

Black mold is very dangerous to a person’s health and well being. It can also cause a lot of permanent damages to building structure and possessions if not cleaned properly. This article will briefly touch on the proper way of cleaning black mold.

Caution is always a good thing – Fight the Black Mold

First off, you need to identify the source of the problem. If you have suffered water damage from a flood or leaking pipes, you need to fix it. The next step would be to run a dehumidifier in the area to pull the moisture from the air. This helps to eliminate the possibility of further spreading of mold growth. Then seal off the first room in which you plan to be cleaning black mold. Hang plastic sheeting over vents, doorways, and windows. This will prevent the mold spores from traveling to other parts of your home or building.

The second step to cleaning black mold is to brush visible mold and dispose of it. Then wash the surfaces with an antimicrobial cleanser. After this, you need to dry the surface completely. It is highly recommended that if you want to properly clean black mold and prevent further mold growth, that you perform a vinegar rinse at least once a week. This is the proper method for cleaning black mold.

Basically four items are needed for mold growth – water, food, ideal temperature and air.

Different mold might need different quantities of these four eg. Some mold require more water to survive and grow than others.

Planet Earth readily supplies air to support living organisms, so that condition for mold to grow is always present. However, if mold spores settle on dry surface, it cannot grow due to the absence of water.

Most of the places inside our homes are dry, thus not providing ideal situations for mold to grow. Nevertheless, other parts of our homes may turn out to be ideal places for mold to flourish. These places are usually damp and wet, located in basements and toilets, probably resulting from piping leaks or floods.

If mold finds air and moisture, but no food, it can’t grow either. Mold feeds on dead organic matter. However, mold is good at getting food in our homes by having microscopic threads to absorb nutrients.

Hence, we can find mold on :

Fabric

Paper

Cardboard

Ceramic tiles (containing particles of food and dust on its surface)

Paint

Drywall

Fiberglass insulation (dust-covered)

Wood framing

Floors

So, we don’t only hate mold for being unsightly; mold can cause structural damage to our homes. We may have to fork out tons of money to repair our homes overgrown with molds. Not only that, we also may have to pay dearly for the damage it does to our health.
