Mold removal in home
Mold is stubborn living organism, if mold starts growing in your home, it will not want to leave.
But the good news is there are several things we can do to help in home mold removal.
1. Eliminate the source of moisture
In order to combat indoor mold growth, we must fix the moisture problem. Without moisture, mold cannot grow.
Some of the common causes for indoor moisture problems are:
- Leaking pipes and roof
- Poor ventilation of the house especially kitchen and bathroom
- Bad venting of household appliances such as washing machine and dryers
- Excessive usage of humidifier
On top of fixing the leaking pipes and roof, we must also control the humidity level within our home. Invest in a good heating and cooling ventilation system to provide better air circulation. Besides that, the use of dehumidifier can also help to reduce humidity level in your home.
2. Keep dry
Whenever there is an overflow or flooding, you should dry the wet materials instantly to prevent mold growth. Use fans and dehumidifier to assist in the drying process. Items that cannot be dried well after 48 hours shall be disposed of.
3. Handling of contaminated items
Items that are contaminated by mold or mildew shall be treated with care. Mild mildew growth on clothes can often be treated with soap and water, then allowing them to sun dry or air dry. Though you should discard severely damages clothing.
Contaminated paper products shall be discarded, though minor damage can be treated by brushing off surface mold and dashing with some talcum powder to remove dampness.
Severe mold infected ceiling tiles and carpets should typically be thrown away. Professional services may be necessary if you want to save minor contaminated carpets.
4. Surface cleaning
Solid materials / hard surfaces can always be cleaned of mold. Brushing of or scrubbing of the surface mold with detergent and water, followed by thorough drying can be effective.
5. Disinfecting
You may want to disinfect the hard surface after they have been cleaned of mold. Use a mixture of bleach and water to effectively disinfect any hard surface. Wipe the solution onto the surfaces and allowing them to dry.
Remember that after you have done mold removal in your home, you shall keep your door closed from this uninvited guest. Watch out for any potential moisture problems, musty odors or water damage. Mold will try to invade again whenever possible. Preventing mold is always cheaper than mold removal.
