I will also keep a bottle of diluted white vinegar in the bathroom and make sure to spray the vinegar solution onto the bathroom walls and shower curtain after each shower. This helps to prevent mold growth and disinfect at the same time. For the bathroom floor, I mop with diluted white vinegar too once in a week.

To remove mold from the corners of bathtubs and showers, I use baking soda and vinegar paste as demonstrated in the video below. Instead of spraying bleach water, I use vinegar water to prevent mold from growing back. It produces the same results too and it is greener to use vinegar for mold removal at home.

Here are some tips that you can practice everyday to eliminate mold and odor from your washer:

1. Leave the door opened after each wash

While tea tree oil is expensive, its broad-spectrum fungicide power seems to be able to kill almost all mold species. Tea tree oil is definitely a better alternative to bleach as it is natural and it does not produce harmful fumes that hurt the environment or the surrounding living beings.

Kill mold and mildew with tea tree oil

1. Mix 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle.
2. Shake well to blend.
3. Spray the tea tree oil solution onto the problem areas such as moldy ceiling, musty rug, moldy shower curtain, bathroom tub, walls and floors.
4. Let the solution to stand, do not rinse with water.
5. It will take few days for the strong smell of tea tree oil to dissipate.

This tea tree oil spray works wonder in killing and preventing mold. It can also help to remove musty mold odor. I usually keep a bottle of this spray in the bathroom for regular cleaning. Spray tea tree oil solution regularly on the areas prone to mold and mildew, such as bathroom walls and shower curtain can help preventing mold and mildew.

Use a sturdy brush to brush off the moldy spots in circular motion, when the molds are loosen up, wipe off with a damp cloth. Replace the cloth once it is soiled with molds, you do not want the molds that soil the cloth to contaminate other areas in your car.

After this is done, use an enzyme-based cleaner to remove the moldy odor. Follow the same procedure above, brush in circular motion and wipe off using the clean part of the damp cloth. You can see that molds and mildews are actually lifted onto the cloth.

Let the windows of your car down a little bit to allow the treated areas to dry completely.
After it is dried, vacuum it over a couple more times to make sure mold spores are removed completely.

Hydrogen peroxide, H2O2 breaks down to water and oxygen, thus creating no residual toxins of any kind when used to clean or kill mold. You can hardly see any evidence of its use in the surrounding environment after a few hours of the application.

Therefore, hydrogen peroxide is a much safer alternative as compared to bleach for removing mold at home. As hydrogen peroxide is less abrasive, it is also safe to be used on porous materials like wallpaper or fabric surfaces.

I usually get my bottle of hydrogen peroxide from a regular drug store. They commonly come in 3% concentration, which is pretty good for the mold cleaning job. It is very affordable; a bottle of hydrogen peroxide only costs me less than a dollar.

Here’s how I kill mold with hydrogen peroxide:

1. Mix one part of hydrogen peroxide with 3 parts of water.
2. Fill this hydrogen peroxide solution into a spray bottle.
3. Spray the solution onto the mold contaminated areas and let stand.
4. When the solution has dried out, re-apply hydrogen peroxide solution again onto the same areas and let it sit for another 15 minutes.
5. Then, scrub the areas to remove all the mold stains.
6. You may need to repeat step 4 to 5 when dealing with stubborn mold stains.
6. Wipe clean with a sponge or cloth.

Since light will reduce the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide, I usually keep the bottle of the remaining hydrogen peroxide in dark place and away from direct sunlight.

If your furniture has lots of molds, clean them outdoor. Remember to put on goggles and face mask to protect yourself from the hazardous mold spores. These tiny particles are very harmful to your lungs and they can trigger respiratory allergies like coughing or even asthma in people who are sensitive to molds.

To implement leather mold removal, first you need to prepare a mild soap solution with either hand soap or dish detergent and mix with water. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush off the mold in circular motion. Next, use a damp cloth to wipe off the soap solution. You may apply a dab of white vinegar to help disinfect the mold stain.

Once the mold is completely removed from the leather, you need to use leather conditioner to restore the moisture. Use a clean cloth and apply some leather conditioner onto the spot. Rub gently until the conditioner is fully absorbed by the leather.

Mold loves warm and humid places. The higher the humidity, the more it spreads. Therefore, the first step of mold odors removal is to control the indoor humidity. Keep the humidity level within the house at 50% or below. Invest in a good dehumidifier to help regulate the indoor humidity.

Though low humidity cannot really kill the mold, but it does help to stop mold from spreading and “breathing” which emits the mycotoxins that stinks. However, if humidity level rises above 50% for more than 72 hours, mold will start to “breathe” again and release the musty odors. Thus, it is very important to keep the humidity level under control for effective mold odors removal.

It is also vital to take note that dead mold can cause musty odors as well as allergic reaction too. After you have “hibernated” the mold spores from spreading, you need to kill and remove it in order to make your home mold free. To clean visible surface mold that grows on walls, tiles, glass, tubs, and other non-porous materials, you can use normal household detergent like Borax.

Damp the surface slightly before washing to prevent molds from becoming airborne. Scrub hard with a sturdy brush to brush off all visible molds. Repeat the process if necessary especially when dealing with stubborn mold stains. Rinse with clean water and allow the areas to dry completely.

Vinegar is another good solution for mold odors removal. Vinegar can kill 80% of the mold spores. Use undiluted white vinegar to remove mold odors. Spray vinegar solution onto the surface and let it stand for at least 15 minutes to allow the vinegar to seep through the surface and kill the mold spores. If you can tolerate the strong fumes from vinegar, you may wipe dry the areas without rinsing. Otherwise rinse well with clean water and allow drying thoroughly.

Next you need to eliminate loose mold spores that are floating in the air. Use an air purifier that equipped with carbon gas filter to absorb the mycotoxins from the mold. The use of steam cleaner will also help to diminish tiny mold particles that have become airborne.

Once you are done with mold removal and getting rid of the mold odors, you need to observe a regular mold inspection to prevent molds from re-grow. Do a routine mold testing, as you will with other household maintenance tasks. Early mold detection can help minimize the infestation.

Keep the areas clean and dry as much as possible to cut down the food source for mold. Be attentive to any leakages or moisture problem in your house and get them fixed as soon as possible. Dry the damp areas or water-damage materials within 24 to 48 hours can significantly lower the risk of mold growth.
