Oppose to common belief, overhead watering does not increase powdery mildew. Indeed, a good dose of overhead watering can help to rinse the powdery mildew and mold spores off your plants.
However, do not do this too often or you will risk having other plant problems.

Here’s some facts about powdery mildew and mold on plants:

1. Shade promotes powdery mildew. Sunlight and good air circulation are important to keep powdery mildew at bay.
2. Though mold and mildew thrive in damp climate, powdery mildew fungi grow rapidly in dry, warm environment.
3. Powdery mildew is not always white and powdery. Mold fungi on plants can appear as yellow patches.

Treatments for Powdery Mildew and Mold on Plants

1. Use a good preventive spray such as Serenade Biofungicide, to control and suppress powdery mildew and other plant diseases.

2. Sulfur sprays such as Safer Garden Fungicide is a good organic measure; used when the first sign of powdery mildew is spotted.

3. If powdery mildew has taken a firm hold of your plants, give a good water bath to wash off all traces of the fungus. However, if this does not work, turn to the horticultural oils. All the oils including sesame, fish oil or a neem oil will suffocate the fungi and prevent more spores from adhering to the plants. These oils can be used for prevention too. Don’t use horticultural oils if sulfur has been applied within the last 14 days.

These are what you need for DIY mold cleaning job:

Protective gears (goggles, face mask, long rubber gloves, disposable clothing)

Visqueen (or other plastic sheeting material)

Blue Tape

Dry wall cutter and / or Sander / Sand paper

Garbage bags

Follow these simple 5 Steps for easy home mold removal.

Step 1: Assessing the area and problem

Investigate how far does the problem stem from.

Identify all the sources that lead to mold growth.

Plan out the mold cleaning procedure and protocols

Step 2: Contain the problem area

Put on protective gear before handling mold. Wear goggles, face mask, long rubber gloves and disposable clothing. This can help to protect yourself from ingesting the hazardous mold.

Use Visqueen, or any other plastic sheeting materials to contain the problem area.

This is to prevent mold spores from getting into other areas of your house.

Contain your area with the help of blue tape, like the picture below:

Step 3: Start the mold cleaning procedure

Dampen the mold infected areas with white vinegar water. Use 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water. This helps to prevent molds from becoming airborne when disturbed / cleaned.

For cleaning ceiling mold, use a mop to dampen the problem spots.

Use sander or sand paper to sand off the stubborn molds off wooden items like cupboards, wooden tables, etc.

Scrub the area while it is still damp using baking soda and white vinegar mixture. Repeat this to remove all the visible molds.

Rinse well with plain water. If rinsing is not possible, wipe clean the area with a dampen cloth. Discard and replace the cloth once it is soiled with molds. You won’t like the idea of contaminating other areas of your house with the soiled cloth.

Let the area to dry completely. Do not use fan or blower to help drying the area as this could spread the airborne mold spores.

Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar over the cleaned surface and allow to dry completely. This helps to kill any mold residue and to prevent future mold growth.

Step 4: Dispose Materials

Dispose the mold contaminated materials using the garbage bags and seal it properly with blue tape.

Discard the Visqueen / plastic sheetings and all other cleaning tools such as brush, mop, cloth, etc.

Step 5: Clean and Filter

After the mold removal is done, it’s time to clean and filter the surrounding air.

You may use those anti microbial soap like Pinkrobial to clean the area again.

Run an air purifier that comes with “Heppa” filter to purify the surrounding air.

Here are some common sources of the problem with basement mold:

* Carpeting – Lift the carpet look at tack strips for moisture stains

* Wall panels and drywall along perimeter walls – Look at walls on your perimeter, they could have mold and mildew problems

* View Ceiling For Moisture Stains – Ceilings and roofs will have moisture stains. Sometimes you can trace the moisture problem right to the source. Be sure to look for the water marks / stains.

* Heaters and Air-Conditioner Handlers – Many times the heaters and Air-Conditioner handlers have condensation which lead to mold problem. This happens due to a clash of cold air and hot air, which create condensation.

* Windows – If you do have windows in the basement be sure to look at the cracks and corners for any moisture stains?

To correctly remove your basement mold problem you need to follow some easy to do mold remediation guidelines.

1. Find the source of the problem
Stop all the water leaks. Fix leaking roofs and plumbing fixtures. Move water away from concrete slabs and basement walls and make sure they remain dry.

2. Attack the source and remove all damages non-salvageable building material.

3. Spray the area that has visible mold with a natural cleaning product such as white vinegar or tea tree oil. Molderizer is also another good natural mold cleaning product that you can consider. This loosens the spores from the surface, make it easy for surface scrubbing.

4. Wipe or sand down the area to break apart the mold and mildew with a wire brush or even a sander.

5. Encapsulate and clean again. The product Safe Shield is an all natural cleaning product that cleans but more importantly prevents mold and mildew from coming back. The solutions creates a clear barrier to prevent mold and mildew amplification.

These are all you need when handling bathroom mildew removal:

- Rubber gloves
- A spray bottle
- A bottle of liquid chlorine bleach
- A plastic-bristled scrub brush
- Some water
- A clean, dry cloth

Step by step guide to remove mildew stains in your bathroom:

1: Put your gloves on.

2. Mix 1 part bleach to 15 parts water in the spray bottle. Never mix bleach with anything other than water, and make sure your bathroom is well ventilated while using bleach solution.

3. Spray the bleach solution directly on any mold mildew stains.

4. Let the bleach to sit for at least five minutes. If there’s any mildew on fabric, like a shower curtain or towels, take it outside and brush it off. Then launder the item, using color-safe bleach if possible, and dry it in the sun.

5. Scrub the stained areas with a brush and then rinse with water. Use an old toothbrush on small areas like grout. Mildew grows in dampness, and cool air holds less moisture than warm air, so running an air conditioner or dehumidifier can help prevent mold and mildew in the first place.

6. Wipe the treated areas dry with a cloth. This mildew may be gone, but leaving anything damp will just encourage a new batch to sprout.

By the time you find out, it is already covered with mold and mildew. So, is there a way to salvage the cookware?

Yes, here are a few ways to remove mold from cooking pots, pans, cups, kettle and other cookware / culinary items:

1. Clean mold with baking soda

- Mix 1 part baking soda to 1 part water
- Scrub off the mold with this baking soda solution
- Rinse well with fresh water
- Wash with normal dish detergent and rinse well
- Fill the pot with water and bring it to boil for at least 15 minutes to disinfect and kill any mold residues

2. Remove mildew off kettle with salt and vinegar paste

- Mix 1/2 cup of table salt and white vinegar to create a paste
- Wipe the paste over the entire interior of the kettle and let it to sit for at least 10 minutes
- Add water to the kettle and bring it to boil for about 15 minutes
- Drain the solution entirely
- Fill with clear water again and then drain. Do this few more times until the kettle is clean from salt and vinegar.

3. White vinegar to clean mold off cookware

- Fill the mold contaminated cookware with vinegar mixed with water in equal part
- You may use undiluted white vinegar if the molds are stubborn
- Leave the cookware to soak for overnight
- Drain the vinegar solution
- Wash with regular dish detergent and rinse well
- Fill the cookware with clear water and bring it to boil for at least 15 minutes to disinfect and kill the mold residues

Note:

1. For stainless steel cookware, fill the pot / pan with oil instead and bring it to boil to disinfect and kill the mold residues.

2. You should only use edible products when cleaning cooking utensils. Bleach is not recommended.
