Dry wall cutter and / or Sander / Sand paper

Garbage bags

Follow these simple 5 Steps for easy home mold removal.

Step 1: Assessing the area and problem

Investigate how far does the problem stem from.

Identify all the sources that lead to mold growth.

Plan out the mold cleaning procedure and protocols

Step 2: Contain the problem area

Put on protective gear before handling mold. Wear goggles, face mask, long rubber gloves and disposable clothing. This can help to protect yourself from ingesting the hazardous mold.

Use Visqueen, or any other plastic sheeting materials to contain the problem area.

This is to prevent mold spores from getting into other areas of your house.

Contain your area with the help of blue tape, like the picture below:

Step 3: Start the mold cleaning procedure

Dampen the mold infected areas with white vinegar water. Use 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water. This helps to prevent molds from becoming airborne when disturbed / cleaned.

For cleaning ceiling mold, use a mop to dampen the problem spots.

Use sander or sand paper to sand off the stubborn molds off wooden items like cupboards, wooden tables, etc.

Scrub the area while it is still damp using baking soda and white vinegar mixture. Repeat this to remove all the visible molds.

Rinse well with plain water. If rinsing is not possible, wipe clean the area with a dampen cloth. Discard and replace the cloth once it is soiled with molds. You won’t like the idea of contaminating other areas of your house with the soiled cloth.

Let the area to dry completely. Do not use fan or blower to help drying the area as this could spread the airborne mold spores.

Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar over the cleaned surface and allow to dry completely. This helps to kill any mold residue and to prevent future mold growth.

Step 4: Dispose Materials

Dispose the mold contaminated materials using the garbage bags and seal it properly with blue tape.

Discard the Visqueen / plastic sheetings and all other cleaning tools such as brush, mop, cloth, etc.

Step 5: Clean and Filter

After the mold removal is done, it’s time to clean and filter the surrounding air.

You may use those anti microbial soap like Pinkrobial to clean the area again.

Run an air purifier that comes with “Heppa” filter to purify the surrounding air.

In the video above, bleach is used to clean and kill mold. I would not recommend using bleach to clean / kill mold as bleach would release harmful fumes which are equally bad for your health. White vinegar is a safer alternative to bleach for cleaning mold and mildew.

To clean and kill mold with white vinegar, mix 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water and spray the solution onto the problem spots. You may use undiluted vinegar solution to treat stubborn mold stains. Let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before scrubbing off with a mixture of Borax and white vinegar. Repeat this process until all the mold and mildew are gone. Rinse well with clean water or wipe clean using damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Allow the areas to dry completely.

In this blog post, I will share with you how to prevent mold growth on wood surfaces and ways to safely remove mold mildew from wood materials.

Molds nourish on the minerals and oil in the paint of the wood surface. This causes discoloration to the wood surface. Sometimes, they can eat into the paint film and penetrate to the underlying wood and destroy the structure.

Most of the times, using some mold or mildew resistant paints for outdoor wood surfaces can prevent this from happening. These paints are formulated with special chemicals to fight mold attack. You can get one of this paint from your local paint and hardware stores.

Bear in mind though, these mold-resistant paints are not suitable to be used on window sills, beds, playpens or wooden toys as the chemicals in the paint can be very hazardous to small children.

How to remove mold and mildew from wood

If you see molds or mildew start growing on wood surface, increase the air circulation and use heat to dry the wood as much as possible. Always keep in mind that stagnant air is as dangerous as stagnant water, it promotes mold growth. Regulate the ventilation to allow fresh air to flow in.

To clean mold and mildew from mildly infested wood materials:

1. Moisten the infected area with little plain water; this is to prevent the molds from becoming airborne when disturbed.
2. Scrub off the visible molds and mildew with mild alkali. You can use washing soda or trisodium phosphate; mix 10 tablespoons to a gallon of water. Alternatively, a mixture of borax and white vinegar works well too.
3. Wipe clean with a damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Discard the cloth when it is soiled with mold and mildew. You will not want the soiled cloth to infect other areas of your house.
4. After the cleaning is done; spray a layer of white vinegar onto the wood surface and leave it without rinsing. This helps to disinfect and prevent future mold growth.
5. Allow the wood to dry completely in the sun if possible. Otherwise, use a blower or fan to help drying the surface.
6. Apply mold or mildew resistant paint.

If the molds have eaten through the paint or coating, you will need to remove all the paint or coating from the problem spots before cleaning the molds. Use undiluted vinegar to moisten the stained spot and let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before sanding down the paint / coating. Scrub off the mold with a stronger solution this time if necessary. Rinse well and allow the wood to dry thoroughly. Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar to help disinfect the area and prevent future mold growth.

Bathroom and shower rooms are prone to mold growth as they exposed to moisture most of the times. So, what I usually do after each shower is to splash clean water onto the bathroom walls to remove soapy residues. These residues if not removed will become the mail food source for mold.

I will also keep a bottle of diluted white vinegar in the bathroom and make sure to spray the vinegar solution onto the bathroom walls and shower curtain after each shower. This helps to prevent mold growth and disinfect at the same time. For the bathroom floor, I mop with diluted white vinegar too once in a week.

To remove mold from the corners of bathtubs and showers, I use baking soda and vinegar paste as demonstrated in the video below. Instead of spraying bleach water, I use vinegar water to prevent mold from growing back. It produces the same results too and it is greener to use vinegar for mold removal at home.
If you have a mold problem and it is not taken care of properly you or your family could become very sick. This is not a problem that you can afford to post-phone dealing with.

What to Do if You Encounter a Mold Problem

If by chance, you do encounter a mold problem, the first thing that should be done is to eliminate the source of the moisture or water. Then you should dry the area out by using a dehumidifier. To further eliminate the mold problem, you need to scrub the surfaces that have mold with mold removal products. You can use normal household cleaners to minor mold infestation. The next step to solve the mold problem is to bleach the affected areas and to do a weekly vinegar rinse. Then it is highly advisable to paint with oil-based paint if possible. This eliminates any future mold problem by trapping any remaining mold spores. It is also recommended to use an air purifier to eliminate airborne spores from the area. This is what you should do if you encounter a mold problem in your home.

In my previous post, where I discussed about mold removal products, I mentioned about using bleach to kill mold. Today I will talk about the effectiveness of bleach as a mold removal product, its usage and limitations in killing mold. To learn about other mold removal products, you may refer to my previous posts.

Bleach is the product we have known for years to be good at killing bacteria and viruses. Some believe bleach can kill mold as well. Yes, bleach is a mold killer, but that’s limited to molds grow on non-porous materials such as counter-tops, tiles, bathroom, shower glass, tubs, etc. When dealing with mold infection on non-porous surfaces, you can use a mixture of less than a cup of bleach to one gallon of water to effectively disinfect and kill molds.

However, the use of bleach to kill molds on porous materials is not recommended for the fact that bleach contains 99% of water. When bleach is used to clean and disinfect porous materials like wood and drywall, the Iodin structure of bleach prevents Chlorine from soaking into the materials to kill the roots of molds. While the water element of bleach penetrates through the surfaces and feed the roots. Therefore remediating porous materials with bleach is said to accelerate mold growth rather than stopping and killing it.

Bleach is corrosive. It releases harmful fumes that can cause serious health problems. When bleach is used as mold removal product, make sure you follow proper safety measures to protect yourself from inhaling the toxic fumes.

In conclusion, bleach can be used as mold removal product for non-porous surfaces like glass, tiles, tubs, counter-top and etc. Do not ever use bleach to kill mold on porous materials like wood and drywall. It expedites mold infestation due to the water content of bleach. Remember to put on protective gears whenever dealing with any mold removal product such as bleach. Do not mix bleach with ammonia, as this will create toxic fumes. Bleach is not registered with EPA as a mold removal product. Thus the effectiveness of killing mold with bleach is not proven.

When mold, mildew grows on fabric or clothing, you will want to clean it right away. Mold becomes difficult to remove when it inhibits longer on fabric and the moldy smell gets more intense.

To get rid of mold on clothes, you need laundry stain remover and vinegar or bleach.

First step in fabric mold removal involves spraying of stain remover over the moldy spot and let it soak for at least 15 minutes before you throw it into your washing machine.

Alternatively, you can use a mixture of vinegar and water to pre-treat the moldy clothes. Vinegar is a good disinfectant and it removes stains well.

After that, put the clothing into your washing machine with 1 cup of vinegar and let it filled with water. Soak the laundry for a couple of hours before adding any laundry detergent.

When washing fabrics with mold and mildew, use the hottest possible water as high temperature can kill mold. For white clothes, you may replace vinegar with bleach for the same procedure.

When mold removal is done, allow the clothing to dry thoroughly under the sun to destroy any possible trace of mold on the fabric.

Mold remediation is vital to people’s health as well as vital to the longevity of buildings. Mold remediation is a process that takes place when mold growth is out of control.

Professional mold remediation is necessary when the affected area is larger than ten square feet. In most cases where the mold infestation is not severe, mold remediation can often be done by the homeowner.

What does mold remediation entail?

Step one involves removing the source of water. This ensures that mold growth does not occur again. The next thing to do would be to run a dehumidifier to eliminate moisture in the air. Then wash the surface with an antimicrobial cleaner. Then rinse down with vinegar and allow the wall or surface to dry completely. Afterward paint the affected surfaces with oil based paint. This encapsulates any leftover spores and mold residue to prevent it from coming back.

Sometimes mold remediation involves tearing out the affected areas completely. Then high ozone shock treatments are used to kill off any remaining airborne spores. This usually is done with a series of treatments. These treatments are extremely dangerous. This is why the house or structure is evacuated and cleared out before implementing the high ozone shock treatment for mold remediation.

If you are considering purchasing an older home to restore, it might be well worth your money to contact one of the local mold contractors in the area. Mold removal is a very important process to restoring an old home. Mold has been known to be harmful to the health of humans and pets alike. It causes allergies, which bring out asthma like symptoms, coughing, watering eyes, and headaches from the noxious smell. Without mold removal taking place, these symptoms can turn into deadly illnesses and diseases. If you cannot remove the mold yourself, it is wise to hire a professional to do it. These people are called mold contractors.

The Importance of Mold Contractors

Mold contractors are individuals who work for a living by removing mold and mold damage for homes, offices, schools, and other buildings and belongings. Almost every place that a person lives has a local mold contractor. Mold contractors can be relied upon to identify leaks and water damaged areas that might be the breeding grounds for the nasty molds, which cause all sorts of problems.

When it comes to home mold removal cost, most people want to run the other direction. At least after the initial reaction, they do. Upon finding out that they have a mold problem; many people want to just paint over it. This is not a smart idea. If anything, the mold growth gets worse and the problem is not solved.

High Costs of Home Mold Removal

While there are several ways to get rid of home mold, some of these options are rather expensive. Home mold removal cost is higher when you choose to remove the affected portion of the walls, ceilings, or floors. Some people choose to “gut” the affected areas, and just remove anything that has mold growth. This costs a pretty penny. Not only do you have to hire someone to make sure every bit is removed, but you also have to pay for the supplies to replace the portions of the house that were torn out. This can add up very quickly.
