These are what you need for DIY mold cleaning job:

• Protective gears (goggles, face mask, long rubber gloves, disposable clothing)

• Visqueen (or other plastic sheeting material)

• Blue Tape

• Dry wall cutter and / or Sander / Sand paper

• Garbage bags

Follow these simple 5 Steps for easy home mold removal.

Step 1: Assessing the area and problem

1. Investigate how far does the problem stem from.
2. Identify all the sources that lead to mold growth.
3. Plan out the mold cleaning procedure and protocols

Step 2: Contain the problem area

1. Put on protective gear before handling mold. Wear goggles, face mask, long rubber gloves and disposable clothing. This can help to protect yourself from ingesting the hazardous mold.
2. Use Visqueen, or any other plastic sheeting materials to contain the problem area.
3. This is to prevent mold spores from getting into other areas of your house.
4. Contain your area with the help of blue tape, like the picture below:

Step 3: Start the mold cleaning procedure

1. Dampen the mold infected areas with white vinegar water. Use 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water. This helps to prevent molds from becoming airborne when disturbed / cleaned.
2. For cleaning ceiling mold, use a mop to dampen the problem spots.
3. Use sander or sand paper to sand off the stubborn molds off wooden items like cupboards, wooden tables, etc.
4. Scrub the area while it is still damp using baking soda and white vinegar mixture. Repeat this to remove all the visible molds.
5. Rinse well with plain water. If rinsing is not possible, wipe clean the area with a dampen cloth. Discard and replace the cloth once it is soiled with molds. You won’t like the idea of contaminating other areas of your house with the soiled cloth.
6. Let the area to dry completely. Do not use fan or blower to help drying the area as this could spread the airborne mold spores.
7. Lastly spray a layer of undiluted white vinegar over the cleaned surface and allow to dry completely. This helps to kill any mold residue and to prevent future mold growth.

Step 4: Dispose Materials

1. Dispose the mold contaminated materials using the garbage bags and seal it properly with blue tape.
2. Discard the Visqueen / plastic sheetings and all other cleaning tools such as brush, mop, cloth, etc.

Step 5: Clean and Filter

1. After the mold removal is done, it’s time to clean and filter the surrounding air.
2. You may use those anti microbial soap like Pinkrobial to clean the area again.
3. Run an air purifier that comes with “Heppa” filter to purify the surrounding air.

These are all you need when handling bathroom mildew removal:

- Rubber gloves
- A spray bottle
- A bottle of liquid chlorine bleach
- A plastic-bristled scrub brush
- Some water
- A clean, dry cloth

Step by step guide to remove mildew stains in your bathroom:

1: Put your gloves on.

2. Mix 1 part bleach to 15 parts water in the spray bottle. Never mix bleach with anything other than water, and make sure your bathroom is well ventilated while using bleach solution.

3. Spray the bleach solution directly on any mold mildew stains.

4. Let the bleach to sit for at least five minutes. If there’s any mildew on fabric, like a shower curtain or towels, take it outside and brush it off. Then launder the item, using color-safe bleach if possible, and dry it in the sun.

5. Scrub the stained areas with a brush and then rinse with water. Use an old toothbrush on small areas like grout. Mildew grows in dampness, and cool air holds less moisture than warm air, so running an air conditioner or dehumidifier can help prevent mold and mildew in the first place.

6. Wipe the treated areas dry with a cloth. This mildew may be gone, but leaving anything damp will just encourage a new batch to sprout.

In the video above, bleach is used to clean and kill mold. I would not recommend using bleach to clean / kill mold as bleach would release harmful fumes which are equally bad for your health. White vinegar is a safer alternative to bleach for cleaning mold and mildew.

To clean and kill mold with white vinegar, mix 1 part of white vinegar to 1 part of water and spray the solution onto the problem spots. You may use undiluted vinegar solution to treat stubborn mold stains. Let the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes before scrubbing off with a mixture of Borax and white vinegar. Repeat this process until all the mold and mildew are gone. Rinse well with clean water or wipe clean using damp cloth if rinsing is not possible. Allow the areas to dry completely.

I will also keep a bottle of diluted white vinegar in the bathroom and make sure to spray the vinegar solution onto the bathroom walls and shower curtain after each shower. This helps to prevent mold growth and disinfect at the same time. For the bathroom floor, I mop with diluted white vinegar too once in a week.

To remove mold from the corners of bathtubs and showers, I use baking soda and vinegar paste as demonstrated in the video below. Instead of spraying bleach water, I use vinegar water to prevent mold from growing back. It produces the same results too and it is greener to use vinegar for mold removal at home.

If the mold is too stubborn to get rid of, you may consider removing the caulk completely. After removing the caulk from your bathroom, sprays bleach water onto the area to kill mold. This is to stop the mold from spreading before re-caulking the bathroom. Let the bleach water to dry completely before re-caulking. When you are done, spray bleach water again onto the bathroom caulk to make sure mold is removed entirely.

Spraying bleach water onto bathroom caulk on a weekly basis can keep mold at bay.
